Supportive Independent Living Program

We believe that deaf individuals should be assisted to achieve their maximum potential for independent living.

Our Objectives Are:
To provide support to deaf individuals on an as needed basis to give them the ability to live independently within the community.

Services Offered:
Provides housing in various locations with staff assistance when needed in the following areas:

  • Interpreting/Communicating

  • Crisis intervention

  • Medical appointments

  • Counselling

  • Finances/banking/taxes

  • Employment placements

  • Social relationships


  • Admission Criteria:
    Individuals must be able to live independently needing only a few hours of support each week. This would include independence in such areas as in cooking, transportation, and personal care.

    Applicant's Qualifications:
    1. Deaf
    2. Developmentally Delayed
    3. Eighteen years of age and over
    4. Non-violent for a minimum of three years
    5. Must express the desire to live in the program and want to improve in all areas of life skills

    Fees:
    The Program is funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. All Residents are charged a rent fee.
    Individuals are responsible for their own living expenses such as rent, food and clothing.

    Application Procedure:
    Applications are available from the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf and are reviewed by the admissions committee based upon a person's ability to benefit from the program and on the level of support required.
    An application must be filled out by the individual, family, guardian or referring agency.
    A pre-admission medical form must be completed by the individual's doctor and must accompany the application form.
    Psychological Assessment as well as Audiological Assessment results are required before applicant can be processed through the Admissions Committee.
    A waiting list may be in effect.
